Course Clearances For Instructors

Navigate copyright requirements related to the use of resources in online and campus classrooms

Overview

When an instructor requires use of material for which permission from the copyright holder is required, the RRU Copyright Office will attend to all requirements of the permission request, including:

  • locating and communicating with rights holder
  • ascertaining any associated costs
  • communicating costs to the pertinent department and await approval for the expenditure
  • maintain records of all permissions

Permission Costs

Should the RRU Copyright Office need to seek permission from a copyright holder in order to reproduce material (in print or online format) for a course, costs will likely be incurred.  Permission fees vary widely, so in many cases we cannot confirm what the cost will be before submitting the request.  Some publishers, such as Ivey Publishing and Harvard Business School Publishing, are more consistent and for those, we can provide a cost up-front.

Upon confirmation of permission costs from the vendor, the Copyright Office will advise the pertinent department and await approval to proceed. The costs will be incurred by the department.

Best Practices

If you have already secured permission for a resource from the copyright holder, please provide the Copyright Office will this information.

As you are considering course readings and resources, please also note the following:

  • whenever possible, use existing RRU resources; please refer to  the Library's databases for available materials
  • for business cases, consider exploring options available through existing RRU databases such as Sage Business Cases
  • when using existing RRU resources is not an option, consider permission free alternatives (e.g. Open Access Resources); please refer to our guide on permission free alternatives
  • consider linking to external online resources; typically, linking to existing online resources is not a copyright violation in that nothing is being copied; however, it is important not to link to obviously infringing materials.
