When you enter the Mergent database, you'll automatically be in the Basic Search tab. You can search for a company from here, or click on "Company" in the menu at the top of the page. Note that the "Home" and "Company" tabs contain the same "Company Search" bar.
You can also define a set of custom company financials you'd like to look at for a particular company from this homepage. Select "Add Items", and a list of financial statistics and ratios (data items) will pop up. Click on them to add them to the search parameters.
Enter the company name or the ticker symbol in the search bar. If you are searching for a company with multiple different listings on a stock exchange, you may want to use the ticker symbol over company name so that you can find the overarching company more quickly.
Here's an example using JPMorgan Chase by both company name and ticker symbol.
When we search the company name "Chase", Mergent Market Atlas brings up listings that look to be related to Chase's different stock series, with the actual company listed below them.
When we search by the ticker symbol "JPM", Mergent Market Atlas brings up the correct listing almost immediately.
All company information is organized under the green tabs in the company profile. The "Overview" page for any company will show you basic information such as the date of incorporation, key executives and their compensation, and ICB/SIC/NAICS classifications.
Beneath this description, you'll find key company financial information including stock price, revenue and EPS (earning per share) growth, and some profitability rations.
If you would like a multiple company comparison, or to search for companies within a defined industry sector or subsector, you can search by industrial classification code (SIC or NAICS).
Underneath "Industry Classification", select the classification you would like to use. Then narrow down the industry sector or subsector by double-clicking into the provided folders. You may also narrow by country of incorporation, state, or the exchange the company is listed on.
Click the "View Results" button underneath "Search by Company Characteristics". You will bring up a list of companies that have the NAICS code(s) you have selected as their primary NAICS code(s), as well as some basic company information including revenue and number of employees.
The "Output Options" button at the top of the results page will allow you to select what information you would like to export about the company, including income statements, balance sheets, and profitability ratios.
You can also search for companies by country within an industry using the Company Characteristics options. This is very useful for finding Canadian companies!
To limit our previous list of companies in the commercial banking industry to Canadian companies only, we will use the "Country of Incorporation" parameters. Select "Canada".
Make sure the industry you want is also selected (if you have already run a search and then decided to limit to a particular NAICS code, that information will still be present.)
Click on "View Results". You'll now see only commercial banking companies in Canada in the results list.
You can select and save any company in the list you have created using the "Company Characteristics" parameters to your 'Active List' of companies. You may add up to 500 companies.
Find your current active list using the blue button at the top of any page. You'll be able to access and add to the Active List as long as you do not close your session.
