Gather information (Library & Writing Centre orientation, Stage 2)

Orientation for students who have started their coursework and are needing more practical, hands-on information. What does research and writing as a student entail?

What's in the Library?

Exterior photo of the Library building, adjacent to pond and green cedar treesThe Library building is a fully staffed space where students can study, borrow a wide range of materials, purchase textbooks, and get help from many student services.

Building hours: The library building is staffed and open 7 days a week, including Sunday and Monday through Thursday evenings until 9pm. Find our complete hours of service, including statutory holiday hours here. Research help with a librarian is available online, in person, or by email Monday through Saturday. Appointments are recommended.

Student kitchen: Bring your lunch or dinner. Our student kitchen has a microwave, kettle, fridge, and coffee maker, and there are vending machines with snacks & drinks on the lower level.

Computer lab: Printing, copying, and scanning (in black and white, or colour) is available in the library computer lab. Visit the front desk at the Library to purchase printing credits.

Study spaces: The Library has 3 private study spaces (also called breakout rooms) that you can book online. These study spaces accommodate 4-12 people, and include:

  • large flat screen
  • computer (PC), or connect with your laptop
  • whiteboard (borrow markers from the Library front desk)
  • WiFi

For help booking a space, review these instructions.

The library has one enclosed designated quiet study space, located on the Pond level. It accommodates 4 people and is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. There are also couches throughout the library, so you can study in comfort.

Borrow more than just print books: Use your student ID card to borrow noise cancelling headsets, phone chargers, scientific calculators, day-use lockers, whiteboard markers, and more. Ask at the library front desk for details.

Student services in the library building: Visit the library to purchase your textbooks from the RRU Bookstore (or visit the Online Bookstore). The Writing Centre, Accessibility Services, Student Engagement, and Counselling Services are all located in the library. Whether you're on campus or online, appointments are recommended.

Textbooks

Required textbooks and course materials may be purchased online, by e-mail (rrubookstore@royalroads.ca) or on campus at the library front desk. On-campus sales are available seven days a week, until 30 minutes before the library closes.

If the RRU Library also has a copy of your textbook in the library, you may find it by searching for the title (in quotations) using our Discovery search tool.

How to borrow resources from other libraries

Can't find what you need? Let us know! If you'd like to access a book or an article that is not available in the Royal Roads Library collection, we can usually source it for you from another library through our interlibrary loan service.

RRU students can also access library collections at many post-secondary institutions across Canada. Visit another university library with your RRU Student card and a piece of government issued ID to borrow books at other institutions.

Get RRU books by mail

Not on campus? We will ship print books from our physical collection to your home address anywhere in Canada.

Only on campus for a residency? Before you leave, bring your library books to the front desk and we'll mail them to your home address along with a prepaid return shipping label. Read more about requesting library books by mail.
